Cyn, it gets me madder than mad to see him paraded into a group scene for a few lines. He is being used to support the storylines of the next generation...phased out is the correct expression, I am afraid. The only thing that can re-vitalize Luke, IMO, is if Genie were to return. Then Luke would have a front-burner story, and we would once again get to see some real talent on our TV's. Really, what was the point in giving Tony another 3 year contract if all they are going to have him do is be a trivial character who rarely gets much to do?
Here is the problem. They are still fixated on "Mob Hospital." I really see no change in moving away from that concept. A love story for the ages does not fit into this concept. Age is a factor too. However, if Luke had morphed into a mafia Don a few years ago, there would be plenty of room for him to drive a story on this show. That's who Sonny is. As long as Mo retains his appeal as this mob character, they are going to stick with him...even into the toilet. This is a major creative decision, and it will take some courage and a change of regime to move away from it.
If Jonathan Jackson were to become wildly popular with younger viewers, we might see a shift. GH needs a younger lynchpin character, and MO is sliding well into the middle aged category. The shift would have to be away from the mob because Lucky would not be a mobster, and Jonathan would not really want to play it. He has some integrity.
I don't think Tony or Genie can turn GH around. Guza would have to go, and Jill Phelps would have to leave too in order for that to happen. ABC would need to want to give this show one last-ditch try. I have my doubts that all this will come to pass.
