This view would fly with me a year or two ago, when Luke's story was becoming extremely marginalized, and shuffled off to the back burner. But Tony's a savvy man, and under this new contract he has gotten A LOT more relevant screentime, and story.
Let's not forget, they gave Luke a new son in the early part of the year, made a big to do about rewritng L&L's history, and even brought back Emma Samms just for Tony's story. That was the biggest front burner, buzz worthy (negative buzz), story Luke's had in quite awhile.
And since he's been back from vacation he's had the inkings of the Valentine story, JJ is back which I do believe was largely due to them wanting to resell Luke, and he's being thrust into the Lucky/Liz/Nik triangle, which is gearing up to be huge. And also, don't forget, the big Cassidine/Spencer story was suppose to be huge right now, but they pushed it back to speed up Claudia's ending. That is still lurking.
Geary isn't going anywhere, if Geary has his say. He's made it clear that he has NO intention of retiring anytime soon. And it's very, very clear to me that when he negotiated his last contract, someone at the top made sure Luke wasn't going to stay the supporting character any longer.
