I'm not sure about Miss Lytton's aspirations when it comes to penning literature, but there is a rumor about the family that I am related to the Bulwer-Lyttons. (There were a father and son who both wrote.)
While I think "a dark and stormy night" is no more horrid than a lot of modern clap trap on shelves today, it's the fellow's salacious histories that mortify me. 
But then, considering the times, they may be more like a randy Boon and Mills rather than The Story of O.
