I posted Chapter One at DWG. I even created a signature tag. (see below) The story pages are white at DWG, so it looks better there.
Still, it was with mixed emotions that I posted. Those of you who write probably know what I mean. Okay, so there is a feeling of exultation when I push the "post" button on a public board. But there's a darker side as well: the dreaded Compare-O-Rama gets set into motion. You know what this is, right? The "Hey! How come she has more posts than I do?" kind of thing. Childish ... but human. Oh my wretched ego!
I've been posting on a public board for a good while now, and I've learned that most of my readers don't comment. But when they do, wow! One perceptive response from a thinking reader is worth twenty dashed-off "Woo-hoos" and "Post More Soons."
Still, I recall the days when Susan Kaye and I were posting Love Suffers Long, the story that so many hated but read anyway. There were a handful of installments--beautifully written, I might add--that received no responses. None. "Is anybody at all reading this?" I thought then. Whenever I post on a public board I remember the sting.
But on my own website, things are different. What I enjoy very much--bear with me as I struggle to put this into words--is checking the counter. It's silly, I know, but it's true. All day yesterday (and even today), every time I checked the "Who's On Your Site," I saw readers on pages, my pages. It was such a kick to see that someone was on that particular page, right then, reading. Responses? Not necessary! Because I can see that people keep coming back ...
