... was in fine form last night! The lines just came rolling out ... I copied them down! That one about Sir Walter looking like a parrot in his turquoise frockcoat! Where did THAT come from?
My overloaded brain, I suppose. Weird how well I can write a man, huh?
For me, it's like the deadline fuels the creative side of my mind. Pressure = productivity. How sad is that? I began yesterday with an outline of where I wanted to go--nothing profound or even very entertaining--and a page of dialog from the beginning scene. I wasn't impressed! (If I have a fun beginning, I'll put up the snippet early, like I did for Chapter 1) As the day advanced, so did the clock. I had no choice: I had to write. And I did.
I tell my high school students that 80% of their ideas will come while they are in the process of writing. Sitting and thinking won't get the job done. Walking and thinking is a little better. Walking and talking out loud is better still! But the trick is to run back to the computer and immediately write down the lines or they'll be lost!
Anyway, thanks for the encouragement, Sue. Often I'm as surprised as the readers at how an installment turns out. That's the wonder of writing, I guess.
