(Huge windstorm, fallen tree during concert same night.) Trees were down all over the city; many neighborhoods were without power. But the MAX was running, so I took that to Hillsboro, since the line ends across the street from the courthouse and parking is inadequate. Gracious, what a crowd of people! The auditorium could not hold all of us. Out of, what, 300 people summoned, fourteen will be chosen ... for one case. One! I'm glad I brought a book, because it took forever to do anything. Eventually the judge came out, outlined the situation, and spoke about the case. We were sworn in and given a whopping questionnaire to fill out--reminiscent of one of those detailed character-study outlines one sees on writers' sites--pages and pages. We were asked about everything. Even about stuff my acquaintances (you!) have experienced. The trial will last two to three weeks, and is set to begin in January. The good news is that my Christmas break is free. The bad news is that if I am called, I probably won't be able to get out of it. The judge spoke frankly about how he needed quality jurors, and then he gave examples of who he wouldn't let off ... "schoolteacher" was one of the non-exempt jobs. ...Next week. If the weather holds, I will be home Friday night and will make the mad dash to prepare for Christmas (food shopping at Winco on Saturday ... happy joy). And then, all of next week I am free. Free to write." So, the best thing to do is pray that the Muse mugs her and things at the ball start moving along. Take care--Susan Kaye
