Posted by Laura Louise Hi Katy! I'm sorry you're unhappy with the progress of ME, but I can't say that I'm surprised--you're not the first reader to voice this complaint! Much of the fault lies with how I portray the characters. For me, watching them act and react is just as much fun as advancing the plot. Our three heroes were in fine (human) form in this last installment, I thought. These traits, shared by real-life males everywhere, drive us crazy! James Benwick, while sensitive and intelligent, has a tendency to be too careful--he holds back and carefully analyzes when he should act. Patrick McGillvary, who has the swashbuckling "gift of command" Benwick lacks, also has a fondness for being deliberately provoking. And Charles Musgrove, while not very wise, surely knows how to make the best of any bad situation--even being stuck in a pub with a particularly tasty brew at hand! (How many pints do you suppose the old boy knocked back before he cheerfully deposited himself in Benwick's library? He was, as you put it, most definitely "off his gourd.") Ah, if only the ME heroes were perfect Regency males, you might say with a sigh. But this won't ever happen because I am at the helm, and I am weary of these kinds of predictable fictional men. (see image below) Which means that ME (together with its predecessor LSL) will continue to be the story readers "love to hate."

... the ME heroes keep us shaking our heads with the "clueless" things they do. ![]()
I don't mind! Hey, it's my job to entertain! Thanks for hanging in there!
