“BE: So, I’m dying to know how you got turned on to the banjo. There’s always that moment, and we remember it as banjo players, when you just say, “Man, the banjo! I gotta get a banjo!” When was that?
TT: It was in 1963, maybe late 1962, when I heard the Kingston trio do Charlie and the MTA and Dave Guard, their banjo player, played this solo in it. (Plays the solo) When I heard that, the light bulb went on. And I just harangued my parents until they bought me a long neck banjo, because that’s what I wanted. And I got a long neck Christy banjo for Christmas in 1963.”

It doesn't get any better than this! I remember seeing Tony Trischka in October 1968 in Syracuse when I was a freshman at SUNY Environmental Science & Forestry. Tony's band played at one of our Monday evening convocations. Tony is about a year older than me; his father was a professor at Syracuse University. I thought way back then, this guy played that 5-string as well as anyone I've ever heard!
It's nice to hear that "Dooley" hasn't lost its appeal.
