Good question and we've all heard the story. In one explanation, George added that the trio donated $$$ from the first recording that put the Seaver kids through college, or something like that. Quite a few years back, a friend of mine who has ties of some sort to a recording studio, recorded yours truly playing the song. This guy likes to keep things above board, and paid a modest fee to the Harry Fox agency. As I understand it, Harry Fox is something like a clearing house for collecting recording fees. In 2022 I got to hang out with a D J friend and help provide accompaniment for a song he was working on. As some , already paid up time, was left over he asked me to record S&S to be played on his show. The studio guy happened to also be a pretty fair stand up bass player and added a bass to the recording. When all was done, I asked him to check out how to make it legal. He checked , wherever he checks, and came up with ...nobody owns it. ??? Go figure...
