I played my new 1982 Martin D-28E (received in early October 1982) for John Marshall, head of the electronics department at that time, on the factory floor of Martin Guitars back in early December 1982. I didn't like the tone of Martin's new undersaddle pickup and drove down to Nazareth to voice my concern. John had me play the guitar for him in the middle of the Martin factory and gave me a personal tour afterward. He put a new pickup in the guitar and shipped it back to me a week later. I traded in that guitar a couple of months later on another new Martin with their even newer thin under-saddle pickup (made by Fishman) which wasn't any better tone-wise than the previous new one. I continued to play my Ovation guitars in pubs.
