Where would Sandy Greenberg be without Artie Garfunkel?
Sandy Greenberg, who happened to be a friend of Art Garfunkel, BEFORE Artie's rise to fame and fortune as SIMON & GARFUNKEL (1964)....
was originally diagnosed with "allergic conjunctivitis" by an Ophthalmologist. After two treatments ~ one labeled as "ineffective" ~
and a second ~ consisting of "topical steroids" - Sandy Greenberg's conditioned worsened.
A visit to another Eye Doctor, told a different story. Sandy was actually suffering from "glaucoma" and due to previous treatments would soon become blind.
In Sandy Greenberg's memoir: "Hello Darkness, My Old Friend"....
he credits Art Garfunkel with lifting him from the pits of despair and helping him to begin navigating life as a blind man (at just 20 years old).
Sandy told folks how Art Garfunkel would take him out into the city; walk him to class; and help him fix his tape-recorder.
Artie made a habit of reading to Sandy Greenberg, regularly. Sandy gave Artie the nik-name: "Darkness"
So when we listen to the song "Sounds of Silence", Paul Simon was not singing about some dark room where he wrote the song.
Paul was actually referring to Art Garfunkel.
