I understood both Nick and Bob suffered from alcoholism (I don't know about Dave or John), but Josh talking about being sung "Hobo's Lullaby" at 8PM, with his father coming in with a cigarette in one hand and a can of beer in the other,give an additional window into the Reynold's household. Nick was a grand personally, but I draw from this comment, his ten years of entertainment, night clubs, traveling, business meetings, hotels and motels, really tested and wrung him out.
