But where were these guys when Nick retired? Not picked. What about when Bob had to retire? Not picked. How about when Bob Haworth left the group? Again, not picked.
The sentiment is that the legacy of the Kingston Trio had to remain with "family." Understandable. As far as the Shane family goes, there's plenty of wonderful kids, but on the down side, there's an ex-wife and a current wife. All put together, could be a real big mess in spite of anybody's good intentions.
You might ask; "what about the Guard family?" I'm sure Bob has respect for the family, but in the big scheme of things, I'm sure hell would have to freeze over first. And John's family? Poor John was really seen as a "hired hand" too frequently in the KT Inc. Nick's family was the choice Mr. Shane had to go with.
I suppose leaving the KT legacy to Nikki Gary and co. was seen as doubtful as well.
So, we're left with Josh and his mates. There's a Youtube video from last year of what will become The Kingston Trio, and, at best, they rate a solid C minus. Those new guys couldn't get up on stage along side Bill, George and Rick, and that's probably why they were never asked on board sooner. They seriously DON'T have the chops. And this is after having been at it since around 2003. I've heard Church folk groups that could do a better job. On that video (granted, only one I've seen), lead guitar parts, banjo parts, high harmonies and dynamics are all put aside for unison singing, and rather rudimentary guitar student playing.
I can't understand just cutting Bill, George and Rick like this. But what I do understand is that Bob considers this a favor to Nick, and in all honestly, Bob is like the elder lion in the jungle that just wants to hear himself roar to let everybody else know he's the king....for now. With his health in decline, I'm sure getting rid of the KT Inc. will be a big chain removed from around Bob's neck.
What I will tell all campers and fans is to buy up that new CD before it's gone....and I mean, like STILL GOIN' PLACES gone. Who will they market the album to in a few weeks?? Josh and (OMG he thinks highly of himself) Mike Marvin can't take it on the road with them to sell - it ain't them!! I also think it was kind of a kick in the head to not announce any of this until the week OF camp.
I have many images playing in my mind, like 10 years ago when Frank Werber finally sold his KT vaults. Following that, just like had been joked about, ol' Frank passed away. The other image was the proposed KT TV special and new documentary with a no holes barred approach. That turned in to a whole lot less.
I wish Bob Shane the best on his final retirement. And Godspeed to George Grove, Bill Zorn and Rick Dougherty. May they continue to work together for a long time to come. We're waiting for you!!
