: basic strum, not frailing. Was he afraid that if he frailed, he'd sound like a guy
: trying to sound like Dave?
: George doesn't frail. He does what he calls fake frailing. Instead of hitting the
: downbeats with a downward stroke, he picks upward. It's called up-picking or the
: Seeger basic strum. While "fake" suggests that it's not legitimate, it's
: actually a bona-fide old-time style used by a lot of the really good old-time
: players. It's less percussive than frailing but when done right (and George does it
: right), it gives the same drive as frailing.
