The emphasis in the responses here seems to be on pop folk players. Among people for whom none of the abovementioned would qualify as really "folk," you'd see a completely different pantheon, Seeger excepted. Names would include Uncle Dave Macon, Buell Kazee, Barney McKenna (!), Mike Seeger, and Roscoe Holcombe to name a few. Eric Weissberg and John McUen can play just about any style of banjo as well. If you include bluegrass with folk, you clearly open up a whole other universe of players, starting with Ralph Stanley and Earl Scruggs.
