Marianne, which preceded Tom Dooley in 1956-57, was the song that actually got me interested in folk type music. I remember hearing it a lot on the radio, in one instance, I can actually remember where I was when I heard it. Seems like it got a lot of radio play. I liked it. Then, my Mom started bringing these LP's home from Woolworth's. Every week, or every few weeks, she'd bring one home. It was the big hits of that time period, but done by what we would now call cover bands. Studio musicians back then I guess. That's where I first hear Tom Dooley. Then Tijuana Jail. Then Worried Man. I liked what I was hearing. Then for Christmas in 1959, Mom and Dad gave me At Large and I never looked back.
