That happened to a lot of us, Rick. John Stewart is responsible for me playing mediocre bluegrass banjo. His style was choppy, but it gave his playing a certain drive. The real bluegrass guys, on the other hand, played really smoothly. I still play choppy, because I can't get Stewart's style out of my head, and I don't have the drive in my picking that he had.
Listening to Dave a lot, on the other hand, really helped my with clawhammer. He had that style down, although without any drop-thumb.
