"A man who eats meat wants to get his teeth into something. A man who does not eat meat wants to get his teeth into something else. If these thoughts interest you even for a moment, you are lost." - Leonard Cohen
Well, maybe the 35-year old LEONARD COHEN was lost when he spoke these words to an audience at the ISLE OF WIGHT, back in 1970. Personally, I don't know why any man who eats steak (including myself) would even bother to analyze why!!! For one thing, I'm too busy enjoying my steak, not to mention the baked potato, the sour pickle, the creamy coleslaw, and the ice cold Dr. Pepper that goes with it!!! Anyhow, no matter how you "slice" it (hahaha) the "lost" singer, songwriter, and poet, from Montreal, Canada, has plenty "meat" in his songs and his poetry. This "new" 1970 album of Leonard's, sparkles and shines, the same way "FLASHBACK 1963" did for THE KINGSTON TRIO: A live concert bringing new life to old songs!!!
Nearly 40 summers ago, on August 31st, 1970, LEONARD COHEN was awakened at 2AM from a nap in his trailer and brought on stage to perform with his band ("The Army") at the 3rd Annual Isle of Wight Festival. The audience of 600,000 was in a fiery and frenzied mood. Apparently, the Festival turned into a political arena, with the trampling of fences and setting fire to structures. LEONARD COHEN took to the stage and calmed the crowd down, as he can do so very well with his words:
"Like a bird on the wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir, I have tried in my way to be free..."
This concert is available on LP (vinyl) and CD and DVD. Okaaaay, so I don't know whether or not you eat meat, but hey - this might be an album you want to sink your teeth into!!!
