The metric that Google uses to measure the importance of websites is Page Rank. Pages are ranked on a exponential scale. PR 4 is ten times more important than PR 3.
My site and blog are now at a decent page rank of 4 (up from 3 and the blog was a 1).
Shaun's Freezine is now a 4, which just blows me away - way to go Shaun.
JohnShirley.net is a 4, but the page at DarkEcho.com is a 5, which makes no sense since JohnShirley.net has all the content. The site might need some tweaking.
Page rank can be used as a guide to how well you do in Google searches and Google is where most of us get our traffic.
