Well, see, I know what you mean--fer sure they AIN'T zombies, no way--no how. Still - - the idea that, we've been bombarded with so many zombie stories and movies over the years, that it could result in a scenario as depicted in ZOMBIELAND -- where survivors' kneejerk reaction is to blow the head's off plague victims--that's pretty black satire, unless I'm reading too much into it. Am I giving ZOMBIELAND too much credit? I don't think so--shambling masses, whether they be sick or undead--serve as a powerful metaphor regardless. Why else would zombies be so popular? That said, of course that in sufficiently unskilled hands, most zombie material is going to fall flat with a resounding thunk.
But I think ZOMBIELAND's saving grace is the skill with which the actors instill a degree of believability and likeability into their characters--plus we're talking Woody Harrelson, here--he helps carry the movie along of course, so its partly a vehicle for his style of charming wit, and that other kid who is carrying the Michael Cera torch--you have to admit, the one thing going for this kid is--he's not Michael Cera-! I was just charmed by the movie. Someone once mentioned it was difficult to pull off "horror" movies and extra-hard to pull off "horror comedies", and I think the movie deserves kudos for having at least pulled off an entertaining zombie comedy. I certainly didn't go see ZOMBIELAND with pretensions of getting scared--ha! Nope. So, I enjoyed it--immensely.
p.s.
I could discuss real Zombie Mythos here for pages - - this could potentially become an insanely long thread . . .
