I don't know, I think it's possible to understand something without practising it - without applying it to one's own life. Not everybody has the kind of emotional faculty to whole heartedly embrace, say, Buddhist realisation.
It is well know sociology that esoteric knowledge is often passed around in "elite" circles - whether there is any substance to what is taught, is another story. This point was touched on in a sociology text book I recently read - very briefly.
I guess the skeptical approach, would be to not trust anybody at all until definite evidence is obtained in support of trustworthiness - but the simplicity of deciphering the message, lack of promotion of the idea one must be dependent on a guru to move forward, & lack of exclusivism, all seem to me to be signs of trustworthiness.
Signs of untrustworthiness: protection of personal needs & reputation, conformity to what is easiest for the average person to accept, expressing one's thoughts in layered meanings to "play the stakes" rather than to open heads.
It is wrong to be prejudice against what one does not understand, & to attack it - by word or deed. Equally, it is wrong to walk into a trap for fear of being prejudice.
