Defining the Dark Brotherhood
An elite club which uses the secrets of enlightenment as ensnaring carrots, tricks people into attempting to solve insanely intricate puzzles so that they feel proud as the secrets of their order are revealed, & they are "initiated" into higher mysteries, higher secrets, deeper hidden knowledge.
The Mafia.
Strategic advantages
Quick to kill "friends," but also quick to kill close proximity enemies. & capable of any atrocity.
Obsessed with control, so have a thorough understanding upon the nature of control.
They may have a more ancient history on earth than the Brotherhood of Light, since more primitive stages in human evolution promote a strategic advantage to the pre-emptive strike of the Tyrant: the advance submissive personality types all flock to the conquering towering Ego, the submissive retreats all run and hide, & the psychologically stable dominant advance personality types, while in some ways more intelligent and clear headed, have no understanding of psychology so are killed before they have any opportunity to defend themselves or gather allies.
Strategic Disadvantages
Rule by fear and deceit, so must keep the majority of them they control dumb, delusional, &/or cowardly.
Were even a significant percentage of the population to awaken from such a condition, they could not persist in their efforts.
the Brotherhood of Light
Attempt to make secrets as easy as possible to penetrate, promote autonomy & free love.
If they are misunderstood, it is usually because of the simplicity of what they say rather than the complexity of their message.
Strengths
United by love - rarely back stab each other.
(I would venture to guess, & Terrance McKenne claimed it to be so, that they have an easier time w/ psychedelic drugs - Ego embrace creates a nightmare of a psychedelic trip, especially with the tyrant personality type)
Do not cut themselves off from allies for egotistical reasons - only because of superstition are they hated by any good people.
Their adepts are objective: transcend projection, delusion, & desire - something the Dark Brotherhood cannot hope for. Albeit probably far rarer in quantity than the Adepts of the Dark Esoteric Circles.
Weaknesses
Their Seekers have a tendency to be too trusting & soft on transgressors.
At the individual level, they are willing to self endanger.
Albeit, All of this has been extremely speculative & constitutes more a fictional story or a poem, than a set of research based conclusions - Existence is extremely diverse.
