That bloody sock of his from the '04 World Series probably gives him a Lifetime Fuck You Ticket to do whatever he wants. I'd imagine that's the Holiest Thing Ever in New England.
On the other hand, if his name is ever leaked as being on that list of PED users that the Player's Association forgot to destroy, his reputation probably takes a bit of a hit, but all he has to do is repent a little in public... then haul out that smelly ol' foot of his and say, "See, this is where the nail... er, I mean scalpel, went in."
More to your point... there's no harm in celebrities running for public office. It's what they're used for after, if elected, that can be troublesome. But that goes more toward the constitution of the person to begin with, not what fame has wrought.
One of my favorite hockey players is currently a Liberal MP. And, by most accounts, seems to do a solid job overall, both in government and out.
A shyster is a shyster... politics attracts a lot of them, and the odds of voting day being anything other than a time to swallow that vomit in your throat and toss your nutsack to the right or left for the latest confidence man to loot enough petty cash and spare change for a few bumper stickers and posters is somewhat slim.
Celebrity is just more practice.
What else is Shilling going to do with the rest of his life, anyways? Run a car lot? That probably won't look good on his Application for Sainthood.
