He's playing a Danelectro guitar. The neck was made from a 2 by 4 and the pickup cover was a chromed plastic lipstick tube. They were made in Redbank, New Jersey for pennies and sold through Sears and Monkey wards. As Jimmy proves, they are a good playing guitar.
He's using no effects and might be using a cheap Valco Supro amp mic'ed through the PA to get that gritty down and dirty tone. I collect old amps and I wish there had been a better shot of the stage so I could ID it.
