I'm not really a follower of his novelty theory either, though it was fascinating to listen to him discuss it.
I have a lot of the same questions that you do -- if I didn't have them back in the early 90s, I do now. Likewise on the mayans, I don't subscribe to them being the Timelords of Central America, though their culture and architecture fascinate. Although I find "2012" speculation intresting on a conceptual or symbolic level, I don't believe it literally. I tend to agree with Erik Davis when he calls it a "21st-century ghost dance."
He also died much too young...
