I think a lot of his work is wildly speculative, but also way more than just books about drugs.
I did a workship with him in the early 90s (no drugs taken by anyone at the evernt) and one thing I appreciated about him was his sense of humor and ability tp step back and say "Do I sound crazy? Maybe I am." -- then grin and laugh.
I've heard a bunch of his speeches, too, and don't know if I'd describe them as "stoned ramblings." Do you know that he was on drugs when he made those?
He was an advocate for intelligent and informed drug use (and I know some may think there is no such thing. There's definitely lots of stupid drug usage out there).
I'd recommend reading his TRUE HALLUCINATIONS for starters, then go from there if you're so inclined. Also -- check out a recently-released dvd titled COGNITION FACTOR. It's got McKenna, John Shirley, and other interesting people on it.
