I just finished it yesterday(shortly before my copy of Bleak History arrived). Thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked that their was a large crew, each with their special traits. I realize some of them were there just for impregnation purposes, to me it just gives off a more realistic feel. I think Larry and the shit talking robots are new favorite characters that will go down in literary history with me. Speaking of the robots, you actually managed to make me feel sad for one of them(in the way you feel laughingly sad when a dog hurts itself) when that one gets shot. I dug the near-orweillian future and the subtext that came with it. I like how the novel changed tones, first I was curious with the crew as they explored the ships, then it became the familiar Alien style survival horror/thriller. Somehow you manage to turn it into an almost war story, before ending with survival again. There was a great pace this book, It was hard to read just a chapter, I found my self reading at least two or three, even though I only had time for one. A bunch of just awesome concepts in this book as well, not only diamond fliers, but diamond surfboard fliers, #### yeah. And at the end, fighting the alien with a Roman shield and short sword, and (what I have quiet randomly deemed a Germanic) Crossbow, that's just the greatest thing ever. Also the ending with the egg cracked and Corgan and Ashley spinning in space was very cool. I enjoyed Reynolds right up until the end, I liked how you could feel for the guy, and they way he becomes a schizophrenic megalomaniac.
Anytime I can #### Yeah multiple times while reading a book, I know I have had a good time.
