In most of the reviews I have seen about Mr. Ed, the writer(s) never give credit to the "voice" of Mr. Ed. While Alan Young was good in his role, he was not the star of the show. Former Republic Pictures western star Allan "Rocky" Lane was discovered by producer Arthur Lubin at a horse stable. He overheard Lane's voice and thought it would be suitable for the character. While Lane was not initially given credit for the voice, it was rumored that the producers wanted the kids to think that the horse could really talk. Oh come on, now!! It was also reported that Lane did not want to get credit because he felt it was beneath him and would discredit in the eyes of his fans. Never mind, that he stopped making westerns in 1953 and this was 1961. When the show took off in popularity, Lane allegedly tried to get credit and was reportedly turned down. He died in 1973, practically forgotten by his fans and the industry. Reportedly only two people showed up at his funeral.
