lethal white are when you breed two overos (there are two types of paints, tobino and overo, with an off shoot of tovero.) when the genes are right (or wrong) a pure white foal is born and dies within 24, 48 hrs. now they have testing for the stallions AMD MARES TO AVOID THIS, if people spend the extra money to do this. but yes, it was the practice to put down a perfectly healthy budwiser horse (they were very protective of the lineage back then) and put down many foals. the old qtr horse breeders also took out and shot foals with too much white as they represented indian ponies or a distraction from the uniform type of qtr horses, these were old ranchers that didnt like crome on their horses. thorobreds didnt allow it either. i think ther is one white stallion reg now with the jockey club. the american paint horse was formed by a gal in the early 60s to save these horses. even the amish didnt allow chrome. old horses like dollar (john waynes) and Pie (jimmy stewarts) were the norm. even the military perferred solids for a uniform group. The bush clydes say they no longer practice this and i have even seen them sell some of them at draft horse sales now that there is a renewed interest in the big horses. i had a team of beautiful belgians. ours didnt match but to a LOT OF PEOPLE, they gotta match. but some of the old time loggers, their teams didnt match but COULD WORK!
some people beleive the overo horse have come from the crossing of old clyds with mustangs to carry the extra white gene that is very desirable today in the paint horses. lots of prejudice among paint horse owners too, re overs and tobianos, pancho of pacho and cisco rode a beautiful overo. where as little joe of bonanza rode one of 3 tobinos. one of which was horribly tortured and killed while in holiwood. a pay back for something. just like cutter bill, a great cutting horse that was castrated by the mafia, cause the son of the guy that owned miley horse trailers owed them too much money so they castrated him. lots of horses have suffered at mans hands. look over the struggle for freedom, trace your present day strength to its source, you'll find that mans pathway to glory is strewn with the bones of a horse.
