Posted by Chris on 6/1/2007, 2:30 pm I can’t remember where I found this, but I thought it worth recording here. Hope you think so too. ‘Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.’(Eph 4:3) - ‘Forward’ - ‘Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.’ (Gal 2:10) The word used in Ephesians 4:3 is different from all these. Hello there,
(‘Endeavour’ indicates active, watchful diligence; it is translated elsewhere)
- ‘Study’ - ‘Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.’(2Ti 2:15) And -
- ‘Do thy diligence’ - (2Tim.4:9,21) ‘Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: ...... Do thy diligence to come before winter....’

To ‘keep’ the unity of the Spirit is our sacred trust. There are a number of words translated ‘keep’ in the Scriptures:
Bosko - To keep as a shepherd
Phulasso - To guard as a soldier
Echo - To hold as a servand did the pound.
Poieo - To keep as Israel did the passover.
Terco’ - To keep as one would a treasure. As May who treasured (dia-terco) certain things in her heart, or as Paul who ‘kept’ the faith (2 Tim.4:7). Here then is our trust and our example. We are to keep the unity of the Spirit as Paul kept the faith; through good report and evil report, through honour and dishonour (2 Cor. 6:8), ever guarding this sacred trust..
