Posted by Robert on 4/20/2007, 6:08 pm Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. (Ps 34:19) Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now I have kept Thy Word….It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes….I know, Lord, that thy judgments are right, and that Thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me. The 3 above passages from Ps 119 suggest that the afflictions serve a purpose in us so that truth and faithfulness may increase. This in also confirmed in some of the passages below. Paul was given some kind of physical affliction, perhaps poor eye sight based on Gal 4:13-15, and this may have been a lingering symptom of the blinding light on the road to Damascus, Acts 9:3 – thus, a reminder to Paul of who he used to be. And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, There was given me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And He said unto me, "My grace is sufficient for thee": for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. We are troubled on every side, but not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.(2Cor 4:8,9) For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. (2Cor 4:17) Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but He for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. (Heb 12:9-13) For the Lord will not cast off for ever: but though He cause grief, yet will He have compassion according to the multitude of His mercies. For He does not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men. (Lam 3:31-33)

During trying times filled with afflictions, it is both comforting and encouraging to consider scriptures on that very topic:
(Ps 119:67,71,75)
(2Cor 12:7-9)
