Posted by Robert on 3/10/2007, 12:59 pm, in reply to "Where is everyone" Sorry about my absence and utter silence. Be assured that I am still living my life of labor and vanity on the earth and eating (and enjoying) the fruits of my labor. I hope that all is well with you in beautiful and quaint Wales. It's Saturday and I have been a bit lazy; but I did go off to the flea market just to look at junk and the bargain hunters. Since then I have been gearing up (for hours) to do a little maintenance on the house. Those gears just don't spin like they used to. Here are some scriptures on silence and keeping quiet I recently collected, which I adhere to perhaps too well at times: They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking. When I [Elihu] had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more) (Job 32:15-16) [When the wise Elihu began to speak to Job and his 3 friends, their many speeches ended abruptly.] Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge. (Job 35:16) [Elihu’s words regarding Job.] Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth. (Job 40:4) [The effect that correction had on Job.] If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth… (Ps 137:6) [Our speech is in error when we forget our Creator and loving Father.] Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. (Ps 141:3) He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. (Prov 13:3) Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles. (Prov 21:23) In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise. (Prov 10:19) A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness. (Prov 12:23) The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things. (Prov 15:28) He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding. (Prov 17:27-28) Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words. (Prov 23:9) A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards. (Prov 29:11) Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. (Eccl 5:2) …the LORD our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD. (Jer 8:14) The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke of his youth. He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him. (Lam 3:25-28) Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time. (Amos 5:13) For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: (1Pe 2:15) But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. (1Pe 3:4) Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (Eph 4:29) I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. (1Ti 2:1-2) Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. (1Ti 2:11) [Silence is part of the learning process.] …we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; (1Thes 4:10-11) There are many more such verses, but the above collection is a good start. I have yet to collect those that contain the key word, "lips."
