He was trying to cover his own sin by laying blame on others. Job 31:33 "If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom". CAIN SAUL And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, He hath also rejected thee from being king.(22,23)

Christ died for our sins and today it is He that truly covers our sins. The following study is from the Old Testament and has to do with those who tried to hide their sins rather than admit to them:
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: But whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
ADAM
Gen 3:12
"And the man said, The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat."
Gen 4:9
And the Lord said unto Cain, "Where is Abel thy brother?" And he said, "I know not. Am I my brother's keeper?"
1Sam 15:19-21
Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the Lord, but didst fly upon the spoill, and didst evil in the sight of the Lord? And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amelak, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people took the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal.
