Posted by Robert on 1/12/2007, 6:59 pm Well...I have read through Proverbs a few times over the years and have collected about 16 that I cannot make good sense of owing to the very sad reality that I don't have the wisdom of Solomon (or the wisdom he had during much of his life). Or, perhaps, in some cases something became less clear in the English translation or in the way words/expressions tend to change. I would appreciate any insight on these: He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall. 10:10 He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure. 11:15 [Does this perhaps refer to giving support to someone which causes you to be unequally yoked?] Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment. 13:23 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. 14:1 In the multitude of people is the king's honour: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince. 14:28 [Does this simply mean there is strength in numbers in a kingdom?] All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast. 15:15 [What is the real point here?] The LORD will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow. 15:25 Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts [or plans] shall be established. 16:3 [Is this dispensational?] A divine sentence [or oracle] is in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresseth not in judgment. 16:10 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly. When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: and put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. 23:1-2 The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable. 25:3 He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears. 26:17 [Does this mean, in effect, don’t try to fix the world?] He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him. 27:14 The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the LORD lighteneth both their eyes. 29:13 Robert
