Posted by Robert on 12/19/2006, 6:55 am They [the wicked] are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly. (Ps 17:10) Because his face he clothed with his own fat, and gathered rolls of fat upon his loins….He will not long be rich, nor will his wealth endure, nor will his shadow lengthen out. (Alternate C.B. translation of Eliphaz’s words in Job 15:27 and 29) Note how man’s “own fat” is used in both scriptures. It certainly is not a fatness that comes from God. The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart. Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in thy law. (Ps 119:69-70) Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. (Is 6:10) Both passages above talk about the heart becoming fat. It has nothing to do with the flesh, but with corruption in the heart or mind of man, corruption that was taken in just as food is taken in and it becomes part of the wicked man. These also speak about man who has become fat with the food of error: But Jeshurun [representing Israel – see C.B. note] waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation. (Deut 32:15) For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked… (Jer 5:26-28) And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the LORD. But, eat the spiritual food that God has provided and a person will not become fat. Ezek 34:14-24 (too long to include) speaks of the “good pasture” that God provides. Then it contrasts that with the feeding of His flock with those who have fed themselves and are fat. Jehovah says that He will “destroy the fat and the strong” There are several scriptures where “fat” is used in a different sense, referring to God’s goodly abundance to the righteous. Those who eat of the “good pasture” will be made fat in a good way – made fat with purity and truth. Here are a few examples: “…he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.” (Prov 28:25) Those [righteous] that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; (Ps 92:14) The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. (Prov 13:4) Of course the last passage above can refer to food for either the heart or the flesh. Thus, “fat” is used to contrast man’s food (lies) to God’s food (truth). There is an interesting “fleshly parallel” that anyone might make simply by casual observation. Eat only the foods that God gives us (meats, vegetables, and fruit) and man does not become fat. Eat man’s foods (cookies, cake, pizza, coke, candy, biscuits smothered with gravy, etc.) and man becomes fat. Again, the best always comes through God’s abundant grace!

This time of year always means that they are trying to fatten me up at work (probably for the kill). This got me thinking about another type of fatness, one described in scripture – fatness not of the belly, but of the heart. When man eats the worldly food/doctrine that comes from his own wicked imagination and Satan, man becomes fat with a very undesirable fatness that is described in these passages:
Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls; (Jer 50:10-11)
