Posted by Lynn on 12/17/2006, 1:09 pm, in reply to "It's back again!!" You have a kindred spirit here in me when it comes to this man made religious holiday. When I try to minimize our involvement in it, some get angry and are offended. There are friends who try to lay more and more burdens starting as early as October, wanting me to contribute to charities I don't believe in, make or buy all kinds of gifts, and ask for "favors" that involve driving into the city to be a taxi service, etc. There is a song by Peter Mulvey that mirrors my feelings so well. Here are some of the lyrics: "It's coming on Christmas. They're cutting down trees, putting up reindeer and singing songs of joy and peace. I wish I had a river I could skate away on. I wish I had a river so wide, I would teach my feet to fly...I wish I had a river I could skate away on". So yes, "father Christmas", and female angels, and the whole fabricated tradition is something I have come to dread. I love my family and always enjoy time spent with them, but not when one day is elevated above another. The true holy days and feast days are clearly laid out in the Mosaic Law. We aren't supposed to create our own "religious" days.
