Posted by Lynn on 11/15/2006, 10:38 am The most thorough way to study this subject is to do a word study on "reward" There are a number of scriptures throughout the Word. Some refer to reward that is given for a particular action and are true in present tense even now. The first usage of "reward" is as true for us today as it was for Abram. HE is our reward. He is our life, "When Christ, Who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye appear with Him in glory". The first use is found in Gen 15:1 An example of a reward for a particular person at that time is David being delivered from his enemies: Ps 18:17,20 Another example of a reward given by God is the reward for praying to Him in secret rather than to be heard before men. Matt 6:6 There are many occurrences of reward in the OT, (especially in Psalms and Proverbs) that speak of reward in a positive or negative sense. The negative is in regard to the wicked. Compare: For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out. During the gospels, reward was tied to various parts of the walk at that time. This involved caring for His chosen people during what were to be the last days: There will be judgment upon the nations, purging of Israel, and rule with a rod of iron during the day of the Lord and the Lord's 1000 year reign on earth. "Rewards" will be meted out swiftly. The positive reward at that time will be the promise to Israel. Heb 10:35,36 Another example is the reward as heavenly Jerusalem. The reward is life eternal with our Lord Jesus Christ. The reward for us today is "the reward of the inheritance". Col 3:23,24 Eph 1:3,4 Eternal life or eternal death. Reward is a free gift through faith. The actions [works] that are tied to the reward are identical to having faith or at least are inseparable from having faith. These include: trust, righteousness, knowledge, suffering persecution, having confidence, and even laboring to know and keep His Word. Those who are faithful perform "good works" with the might of His Spirit in the inner man. We endure to the end, fight the good fight of faith, work out our salvation because the reward IS our salvation. The reward is Christ Who is our Life. Although we are saved by grace, through faith, and not by works, our salvation is both a free gift [that cannot be earned] and a reward for faith and the faithful walk of the believer. Loss of reward comes only through unbelief! Col 2:18,19.

Dear Chris,
Others refer to a reward that has already been given to someone. Still other uses refer to a future reward. It is helpful to divide the study into different periods since there were distinct dealings and promises made for some and not for others during a later time.
After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, "Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward".
"He delivered me from my strong enemy"...The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness...For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God".
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut the door, pray to thy Father Which is in secret, and thy Father Which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Pr 24:14, 20
So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
Matt 10:42
And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of water...he shall in no wise lose his reward.
Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive "the promise".
Rev 22:12,14
