MTABob, as for learning the banjo, get a copy of Pete Seeger's little red banjo instruction book. His basic strum is pretty easy to master and will give you a lot of versatility.
Also, listen to Dave on the first album and the hungry i album. At that point, Dave hadn't mastered any of the traditional banjo styles. He was just a talented guy messing with a banjo, but even then, his playing was highly effective. "Sloop John B" is a real good example of this. By the end of his tenure with the Trio, Dave had mastered a lot of different styles and was very, very good.
