Re: New Marvinettes video
Very good observation Joe. Guitar accompaniment is very near and dear for me. John did a nice job IMHO. I believe there were more than a few times, in the studio, that a ringer may have been brought in for banjo work....
Josh, his guitar playing got way better as a solo but I sure wouldn't call him a hack for his guitar work with the Trio. Nick and Bob were strummers, so he had to fill in with single-string work. It's wasn't solo playing, as much as back-up.
You're right about the fingerpicking as a solo. Very nicely done. IMHO, his fingerpicking on "Eyes of Sweet Virginia" is right up there with Paul Simon's fingerpicking. Did Stewart fingerpick with the Trio or stick with a flatpick?
Another oddity: before the Trio and after, he was pretty good at frailing, but I don't recall him frailing on any KT album.
I would disagree. I love the feel of his banjo playing, but thought he was a hack on the guitar during the KT.
When he went solo, it was like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon. I really learned to fingerpick as a kid by sitting in front of the record player and spinning everything between "Signals Through The Glass" to "Cannons In The Rain". That boy spent some time in the woodshed.
It was all superior to what's being discussed in this thread.
