Re: Favourite Group of the Folk Scare
Exactly the same for me. I remember hearing Marianne on the radio before I heard of the Kingston Trio. Once I heard them, I was hooked. In 1959, my parents gave me my first LP for Christmas. It was At Large. I went out and spent my allowance on the first album and Hungry i and Stereo Concert. I couldn't get enough of them. The group I got into after the Trio was The Brothers Four. I just liked their music. Then it was Ian and Sylvia, and after that, the flood gates opened! And I'm glad they did.
Although there are more highly regarded 50's folk groups, I must give credit to the very first "Folk Group" which piqued my interest in the genre; Terry Gilkyson and the Easy Riders and their song: "Marrianne". It was at that point, I knew that there was an alternative to Rock & Roll.
Of course, Belafonte and calypso added to this musical direction.
Then, the Kingston Trio came on the scene and that settled it for me!
Starting from the KT, I "discovered" (for myself) Bud & Travis (Mexican/Latin music for a Chinese?!, that is a huge statement!). Listen carefully to their music, vocalizations and exquisite guitar work; there were none that compared in that arena IMHO.
There are a few others but they may be out of the 50's era.
