to me, lightfoot was/is the best-ever singer, songwriter and singer/songwriter. far above denver and paxton TO ME (for one thing, it seemed like so many of tom's songs lifted age-old melodies note for note). and dylan was more poet that songwriter to me; i sure wouldn't call dylan a singer by any stretch of the imagination. dylan's songs sure could "strike a chord," but not an artistic one, again - for me. there are a great many songwriters that weave their words beautifully, and include great imagery, like lightfoot and john stewart. i'd probably put stewart above all but lightfoot during their most productively satisfying eras.
i first saw GL, buckskins and all, at his very first performance at the Troubadour in LA in '68, with Red and John. they seemed really surprised when the audience started to applaud on the very first chord (the folk music station played his music long before he arrived on the L.A. scene). the characteristic Red Shea glance and smile said it all at that moment.
