Re: Kingston Trio The First 60 Years
Sorry I meant Bob H. I just got a W fixation there for a minute.
I'm sorry, but every time I listened to Bob Haworth, I thought he wasn't cutting the mustard. His voice and delivery were just not that good IMO. If Shane wanted to raise the caliber of the KT performance, he needed a better tenor. Rick Dougherty is a better tenor.
I don't know Bob W and am offering no opinion as to his character or work ethic. Only his voice and delivery.
Bob Haworth is an amiable and good natured guy, and a friend to many of us here.
I last saw George-Bill-Bobby on Father's Day 2004, and I PROMISE you Bobby was having no difficulty singing the harmony parts.
Joe, there are 2 words I would use to describe Bob Haworth:
(we could add alot more, but you get my point)
By the by, what also worked against Bobby Haworth was that CD "Still Goin' Places" the Kingston Trio released back in 2005.
I remember Bob Shane's wife (Bobbie Childress) being critical of the album and made some negative comments about Bob Haworth's voice.
Problems were beginning to brew even then.
(besides coffee) :>(
in Bob Shane's defence, he issued a severance check to Bob Haworth after his dismisal. ($10,000?)
And even after his dismissal, Bob Haworth stayed loyal to Shane and never said an unkind word about him.
One more thing.....
(someday Estate Columbo will sue me, I know it) ;>)
To answer Joe's question, George Grove was also involved in the firing of Bob Haworth.
In fact, if I remember correctly, George & Bill BOTH complained to Bob Shane.
Two complaints I know of:
1) Bob Haworth losing his voice and having problems harmonizing, etc...
2) Bob Haworth appearing to be distracted and awkward during concert performances.
By the by, Dave & Joe ---
whenever Nick Reynolds was sick and unable to perform with Bob Shane & George Grove,
IN A PINCH, who'd come through for Bob Shane and the Kingston Trio???
Yes Craig, Exactly, that is right. The other board went crazy when that happened. Shane came on the board, and asked, don't you think I know how run my business? Even Alex Hasaliv came on the board to complain about how unfair it was.
I mentioned this on Crossroads when all the commotion about the new group consumed the board for awhile. I said, this is just like the firing of Bob Haworth. Ken didn't like it. It's a ood ting I didn't say it reminds me of RIZ days.
Guys, I don't like what happened to George, Bill & Rick. Not one bit.
It was wrong as wrong can be!!!!!!!
BUT, if I remember correctly ----
Wasn't Bob Haworth also "blindsided" when Bob Shane fired him and suddenly replaced Haworth with Rick Dougherty?
George Grove & Bill Zorn wanted Bobby Haworth gone, yes?
(Karma, anyone?) :>((
Very true!!! Sadly The Kingston Trio became history as GBR exited that stage in Asheville last September!
They went out in style, to the thunderous applause and cheers of thier fans and friends!
TRUE THAT, Rick!.....Joe P
Supposedly, something like this was mentioned a year or more ago when the PBS special ran The Kingston Trio Celebration. It was said that there was going to be a second PBS Special. Maybe this is it. One can only hope. I don't agree with the title though. It's not the first 60 years. It's the only 60 years. It ended last September.
On Rick Dougherty's facebook there is a posting August 17 That there will be a TV special The Kingston Trio The First 60 Years, anybody know anything more about this?
