I agree, John.
I've often wondered if he took some time off and woodshedded for a while. Even his guitar playing seemed to leap forward.
I never really thought John was a great writer during his Trio days. There were several good songs, of course, but many were FAR beneath the quality that started appearing in "Signals" and never stopped after that. I was STUNNED by the songs in "Bloodlines" and then in "Signals" (discovered "Bloodlines" first). In some ways, the boy seemed to become a man in terms of imagery and narrative power. What a writer!
