First I would take it to a Martin dealer and compare it to a new one. Maybe some new Elixers. If that didn't work, I would take it to a luither. They should be able to tell you right off.
I know you have to hear it to know what I mean, but I'll try to describe the problem I seem to have with my 1970 D-18. There's no sustain. If I pick up the guitar and play a chord (I just played a C major chord), the sound dies out in three or four seconds. It just seems to deaden and go away. I have Martin Life Span medium strings on it. Could I need a new saddle or nut? Or am I expecting too much and three or four or five seconds is respectable sustain. It just sounds dead to me. It's depressing. It just doesn't sound like a Martin should.
