Re: Mike Marvin in the New Yorker
Steve: Thanks--the name jumped out at me and I googled the story with the question---her photo popped up with the story....."NEVER MIND"...Joe P
Joe...Gretzky's wife is Janet Jones, former actress. The Janet Jones in the Moonves story is a different woman with the same name. In many of the stories about this debacle, she is referred to as ...writer Janet Jones.....probably to differentiate her from Mrs. Great One......
Here you go:
A decade earlier, aspiring screenwriter Janet Jones met Moonves in his office for a pitch meeting. She arrived to meet him at 20th Century Fox, briefcase in hand, wearing a pantsuit, ready to talk about her screenplay. He offered her a glass of wine and made unwanted sexual overtures.
“He came around the corner of the table and threw himself on top of me. It was very fast,” Jones told the New Yorker, saying Moonves began trying to kiss her. Jones said that she struggled, and shoved Moonves away hard, yelling, “What do you think you’re doing?” Moonves responded, “‘Well, I was hitting on you.'”
Jones recounted the experience to producer Mike Marvin, who said he confronted Moonves about his behavior. Not long afterwards, Jones said she received a threatening call from Moonves who told her, “I will ruin your career. You will never get a writing job. No one will hire you.”
I believe this Janet Jones is the current wife of Wayne Gretzky--the Great One....sad for anyone who is assaulted like this!!.....Joe P
I actually just told him on FB via another friend's feed that I respected what he did for that woman.....
Sue, I have no problem with you posting this here.
Reading through the Ronan Farrow piece in the New Yorker. It talks about sexual harassment at CBS by the head honcho Les Moonves...
I know this is a folk message board...and I am NOT trying to bring up that whole issue but this part jumped out at me...
"More than a decade earlier, in the spring of 1985, Janet Jones was attempting to break into the industry as a writer. The producer Mike Marvin liked an idea that Jones had for a screenplay, and helped broker a meeting between her and Moonves, who at the time was a vice-president at Twentieth Century Fox. It was Jones’s first pitch meeting in Hollywood. Moonves’s assistant scheduled a late-afternoon appointment at his office."
..the next couple of paragraphs go on to detail the incident that involved Moonves...
..and then his name appears again:
"Mike Marvin told me that he remembers introducing Jones to Moonves, and that she was troubled by the meeting. He said that he confronted Moonves about it at a gathering, saying, “Whatever happened, that girl was upset.” Moonves, Marvin said, became furious. “We definitely had a screaming match over this,” Marvin told me.
I'm not sure what to make of it but a quick check of IMDB says there's only one Mike Marvin....
