Re: Performers requiring private bathrooms
Yup--that's why Matt was gone for a least a week each time he had to go to Fort Hays....Joe P
Fort Hays and Dodge City are quite a ways apart. Hays is in the northern half of the state on I-70, and Fort Dodge is southwest(edge of the universe). Hays is pretty much the only thing between Salina and Denver.
It's barren out there.
Josh: Fort Hays---wasn't that the County Seat for Dodge City? It's where Gunsmoke's Marshall Dillon took his prisoners to trial and then a possible hanging---no??.....Joe P
I've been in-firmed this week and have had some time reminisce over some stories I heard in childhood.
My dad saw all the great folk groups and had some cool stories. The "private bathroom" part of the rider post below jogged this one loose.
Dad attended college in the 60's at Fort Hays State, in Hays KS(alma mater of Mickey Spillane, but that's another story). One of his hometown buddies was involved with the venue and got him front row seats to all the folk shows.
The New Christy Minstrels were in town, and he was seated on the front row as usual. Five minutes to show time he realizes he has to pee and makes a bee line for the men's room. He finishes, and in his rush throws the door open on his way out and knocks Larry Ramos ass over tea kettle. He knew instantly who it was was and apologized profusely. He said "Sorry, Larry-I didn't want to miss the beginning of the show". Larry replies "Don't worry. They won't start without me".
No private bathroom back then.
