Most of the Martin weirdness was in the 70's and gone by the 80's, and even then there were some fine guitars. I think you have to take each one on it's own merit, but I'm not aware of any particular problems from this era. Elderly gives you the advantage of an expert evaluation of the guitars condition and any flaws that would need to be addressed.
'92 would have the benefit of an adjustable rod. It also has the low profile neck which could be good or bad depending on the players preference.
