: I’m posting my reaction to the KT interview
: here and also on Rick’s board, partly
: because it is so different from all the
: other postings. I have read all the other
: comments, and I know I’m in for a lot of
: ridicule. Most of the other comments just
: aren’t favorable. I paused for a moment
: before hitting the “post” button because I’m
: expecting an onslaught of belittling
: comments which, frankly, I normally find
: hard to take; but I went ahead and posted it
: to see if anyone else felt the same way.
: I want to make it clear that I feel terrible
: about how George, Bill, and Rick were
: treated, especially if the rumors about
: hijacking are true. Maybe Bob’s financial
: situation left him no other option. I’ve
: always liked the GBR trio and wish that
: something could have been worked out, but I
: think it’s too late for that.
: So here goes. I enjoyed the interview as a
: pleasant discussion between “The Kingston
: Trio” and a person who had always liked the
: group from the past and still likes them.
: She conducted the interview as though no
: controversy existed (whether or not she was
: aware of it). She let the group have their
: own desired place in Kingston Trio history
: as a natural evolution. The musical
: selections were well chosen for nostalgia
: reasons. I would say that the performances
: were passably pleasant, and not full of
: unpleasant sound. Some of the more musically
: gifted pointed out some of the more
: objectionable performance characteristics,
: but I think that they did a decent job of
: putting out the old time KT sound that many
: audience members want. As a minor comment, I
: think the banjo was a little too loud on
: “California Bloodlines”.
: Now regarding the “facts” in the interview,
: I think that a number of comments were made
: based on speculation of the recent past. I
: haven’t drawn any conclusions, but I think
: some people have made some statements that I
: won’t dispute because they seem logical. But
: I don’t know. I think the current group
: truly believes much of what they say.

: Thanks to Valerie for posting that link.
: OK. I've more or less kept my mouth shut on
: this whole deal-mostly because I'm just not
: as emotionally invested. Unlike some of you,
: I have no personal relationships with the
: participants-just a fan.
: For me, no Shane, no Kingston Trio. I
: bought the GBR record(can't think of the
: name), and it's pretty good-I enjoyed it-but
: it really had nothing to do with the KT. I
: DO respect their musicianship-they were
: really tight. You can't fault their
: Having said that.......
: Sweet baby Jesus do these new guys suck.
: Singing flat, timing issues, can't sing in
: unison, no blend what so ever. I know a few
: people on this board who are way more
: qualified to perform this stuff. The single
: note guitar lines that George Grove could
: play standing on his head are BUTCHERED in
: this clip(I only made it 10 minutes in,
: BTW). These guys were "THERE",
: but they don't know Ervin Drake wrote
: "It Was A Very Good Year"
: SPECIFICALLY FOR BOB SHANE? Gimme a
: freakin' break.
: I stopped following the KT seriously after I
: attended my last show in '05, and only
: followed peripherally after that. What is
: out there now is a parody. Certainly an
: ignominious end to a 60 year legacy.
: The situation for George, Bill, and Rick
: certainly bites. Bob Shane seems to be in a
: tough spot at a time in his life when he
: should be cruising. I do feel a little weird
: about the personal info on the Shane's being
: disseminated, but that's not my battle to
: fight. I wish things had gone differently
: for all of them, but so goes life.
: Harsh? Perhaps, but Rick said this was the
: place to speak your mind.
: Rant over.
