Re: Tim's banjo playing
I felt a responsibility to the music of the KT and the fans to learn these kinds of banjo riffs as Dave and/or John had recorded them. After all, a lot of time, talent, and Voyle had gone into their preparation. So with something like this particular solo (MTA), tearing it apart to find out what it was made of was, to me, equal parts joy, discipline, and necessity. Also, should a banjo player at Camp want to know exactly how Dave/John did something to get that unique sound, I didn't want to say "I don't know."
Much of the pleasure I derived in performing on the banjo was in knowing that the essential sound created by Dave/John was always there, augmented by whatever else I wanted to add. As with anything else in life, one's only limitation is one's ability.
