I’ve had the pleasure of meeting George the day he stepped into his role as a member of the Kingston Trio. Over the years we became good friends. I was supposed to be at that last show in Asheville, but had to cancel due to my mobility issues
But I remain in touch with George, Bill and Rick
In 1958, when the KT was in their prime, I lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time, I was 16 years old living in Washington DC, I attended my first KT concert at Uline Arena and managed to get back in the dressing room area and met all the guys. Due to their “meet ability “ I was easily accepted by Nick, Dave, Bob and David Buck Wheat
They returned to the DC area several more times over the next 3 years and each time I became better known to them.
By now I had graduated high school and went active duty in The US Naval Air Reserves.
I remained in contact with the Trio and was able to travel far and wide to KT shows, due to having the privilege of getting booked on military flights for free.
There is much more I’d enjoying sharing but it would take volumes of print. Bottom line to my ramblings here is to express my disappointment with the way GRB were treated.
Bob Shane and I became very good friends over the years and remain so, he was the voice and spirit of the KT, I was with Shane, George and Bob Haworth the night before Bob suffered his heart attack!
When Bill Zorn stepped up to the plate I was delighted the KT could continue, but their was a void there. Without Bob Shane, something was missing.
Short time later Bob Haworth exited and Rick came onboard.
At first the GBR had somewhat of a “limelighter” sound, but soon developed into the most talented, musically and vocal sound of The Kingston Trio. And George Grove became the heart and sole of the group! George is an individual loaded with class and talent, he’s a gentle man and a gentleman. With 42 years as a member of this group, it’s a damn shame, at age 70, he and his partners, abruptly find themselves unemployed and replaced by amateur wannabes.
: I'm with you Bob!
